If you’ve been in school (public, private, or college) than you are undoubtedly familiar with the theory of Evolution. Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859 revealing his theory of Evolution. To put it simply, Evolution is the process of change in all forms of life over generations. It means that we all are at our present state because we “evolved” from something else.
Many wonder why this even poses a problem—but it indeed does pose a large problem to the millions of people who believe in God. Evolution was rejected by the scientific community until the famous Scopes Trial in Tennessee in 1925, where the courts mandated that Evolution be taught in schools. That means that in one way or another, Evolutionary thought has had some influence on our life.
The most important thing to understand is this: Evolution has never been proven to be fact, and thus remains a theory. That means that scientifically, there has not been any conclusive, empirical, or definitive evidence that evolution has even happened, now, in the past, etc. Where we run into problems is that elementary, middle school, high school, and college text books all claim that evolution is a fact. To be blunt, that couldn’t be further from the truth!
Evolution states that life began with a single chain of just the right proteins and amino acids, which them evolved, over millions of years into a single-celled organism, and then, out of the single cell, evolved into all the complex life we have on earth today. Evolutionary Biologists speculate that life on earth is billions of years old…and that we are all just a random accident. There is no purpose, no morals, no meaning to life. Imagine the consequences of that being true.
Genesis asserts “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (1:1). Now, I’m no scientist, and I never claimed to be one (I just have common sense), but that doesn’t say anything about a Big Bang Theory, or the onset of evolution, does it? Also, as you go through the rest of Genesis 1, the phrase “and there was morning and there was evening—the ____ day” all the way up through the seven days of Creation. An interesting things about these passages of Scripture is that the word for “day” in Hebrew literally means a twenty-four hour period of time—not billions of years!
The element that makes evolution work is time. What do I mean? I mean that if it were at all a plausible theory, than indeed it would take billions of years to notice anything. But New astronomical data shows that the universe isn’t billions of years old, but rather, relatively young! If you look at the Genesis accounts of Creation, then God created a “Fully Grown” universe—not just a baby one, thus it would give the impression that it’s a lot older than it really is. Evolution also violates the second law of Thermodynamics, which as Dr. Richard Paley states, “The Second Law states that all things in the Universe tend to disorder – or as it is called by scientists, entropy. Scientists say that entropy rises and can never decrease. By this they mean that things will always get more disorderly. This is a scientific fact that can be seen in our everyday lives. Examples of this phenomenon include: a child’s room will become more disorderly over time, but will never spontaneously clean itself up; buildings will crumble and decay, but will not repair themselves; people, who do “repair” themselves in the short-term, will nonetheless grow old and more physically feeble in the long-term.”
So is evolution a fact? Absolutely not. There is no “missing link” or special evidence that proves it—but we can see that we live in a wonderfully complex world that is orderly, precise, and amazing. Psalms 19:1-2 says,
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (2) Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.”
Romans 1:20 says,
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
We can see that the Bible is clear: There is a Creator, and we can see that through His Creation! So next time you hear something about evolution, think twice! Just something to think about!
